Poacher arrested with 32kg venison, hunting traps in Bagerhat
Coast Guard personnel arrested a suspected deer poacher in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat early Wednesday, seizing a large quantity of venison and wildlife hunting equipment from his home.
The detainee, Akter Biswas, 40, son of Ibrahim Biswas of Kanainagar village, is believed to be an active member of a deer-hunting syndicate operating in the Sundarbans region.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Coast Guard’s Harbaria Station, accompanied by police, raided Akter’s house and recovered 32 kilograms of venison, two deer heads, eight deer legs, and 2,000 metres of deer-hunting traps, said Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque.
He said the poached meat and body parts were stored in the house for illegal sale.
Akter Biswas was later handed over to Mongla Police Station for legal action under wildlife protection laws. Authorities say operations against poaching in and around the Sundarbans will continue.
