The government has appointed Omar bin Hadi, brother of the Inqilab Mancha's slain spokesperson Sharif Osman bin Hadi, at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Birmingham, the United Kingdom.

The appointment, signed by Joint Secretary Abul Hayat Md Rafiq by the order of the President, was confirmed through a notification issued by the Contract and Foreign Appointment Wing of the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday, January 15.

According to the notification, Omar bin Hadi has been appointed as Second Secretary at the mission for a three-year term, effective from the date of joining.

Sources said that there is currently no sanctioned post of Second Secretary at the Birmingham mission. A diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, said that when appointments are made by the Ministry of Public Administration, the post is automatically created.

Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a prominent figure of the July Mass Uprising last year, was shot in the head on December 12 while travelling on a rickshaw on Culvert Road in the capital's Bijoynagar area after Jumma prayers.

He initially underwent surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and was later admitted to Evercare Hospital.

For advanced treatment, he was airlifted to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18.
