Former caretaker govt adviser Hafizuddin dies

Former adviser to the caretaker government M Hafizuddin Khan passed away on Wednesday evening at his house in Uttara, Dhaka, due to complications of old age.

His cousin Liaquat Ali confirmed the matter.

M Hafizuddin Khan was born on June 9, 1936, and was 89 at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a large number of relatives, colleagues, and admirers.

During his career, Hafizuddin Khan served as Secretary of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology. In 2001, he was appointed adviser to the caretaker government, where he oversaw several key ministries, including finance and planning.

He also served as president of the Central Executive Committee of Citizens for Good Governance (SUJAN) and as chairman of Transparency International Bangladesh.

In addition, he held positions as director of BASIC Bank Limited and Rupali Bank Limited, and later served as chairman of Agrani Bank.

In 1996, Hafizuddin Khan was appointed as the sixth Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of Bangladesh. After completing a long government career spanning 35 years, he retired from public service on August 7, 1999.

Following his retirement, he lived with his wife at their residence in Uttara.

Liaquat Ali said Hafizuddin Khan’s body is currently at his Uttara residence. A decision regarding the janaza will be taken after the arrival of his two daughters and their families from Canada.

He also confirmed that Hafizuddin Khan will be laid to rest at his ancestral village home at the Rahmatganj graveyard in Sirajganj district.
