MP Atiq narrowly escapes fatal road accident
Kurigram-2 lawmaker Atiqur Rahman Mujahid narrowly escaped death in a road accident on the Rangpur–Kurigram highway early Tuesday, while his chauffeur and personal assistant were seriously injured.
The accident occurred around 6:30am in the Kaunia Bailey Bridge area as the MP was returning to Kurigram from Dhaka.
According to sources, the microbus carrying the MP collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused the vehicle to lose control and plunge into a roadside ditch, leaving it badly mangled.
Although the MP sustained minor injuries, he received first aid and is currently staying at his residence, sources said.
His driver and personal assistant, however, were critically injured. Police rescued them from the scene and sent them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Quoting the MP’s aide Akram Hossain, witnesses said the accident occurred when a reckless truck suddenly changed lanes and crashed into their vehicle.
“The vehicle was severely damaged, but by the grace of God, we survived,” he said.
Attempts to contact the MP for comment were unsuccessful.
