The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained former Speaker of the National Parliament, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, from her house in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, on Monday night.

Additional Commissioner of the DB, Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the detention to Jago News.

After Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power on August 5, 2024, former Speaker Shirin Sharmin resigned in September of the same year. Following the 2008 election, when the Awami League came to power, Abdul Hamid was elected Speaker. After he was elected President, Shirin Sharmin was elected Speaker on April 30, 2013, and continued to serve in the role consecutively thereafter. She was also elected as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.

A lawyer by profession, Shirin Sharmin was born on October 6, 1966, in Dhaka. Her father, former secretary Rafiq Ullah Chowdhury, served as the private secretary to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Her mother, Professor Naiyar Sultana, was a member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC).

Shirin Sharmin is facing a case filed over violence during the July mass uprising. On August 27, 2024, a murder case was filed against 17 individuals, including Shirin Sharmin and former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, in connection with the death of goldsmith Muslim Uddin (38), who was shot in Rangpur.

The case was filed in the Metropolitan Kotwali Cognizance Court by Dilruba Akter (32), the wife of the deceased, from the East Ganeshpur area of Rangpur city. Former minister Tipu Munshi has been arrested in the case and is currently in jail.
