A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former DGFI Director Lt Col Md Afzal Naser on a four-day remand in connection with the killing of BNP activist Makbul in 2022.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah issued the order after police produced Naser in court at the end of his previous three-day remand and requested a fresh seven-day remand.

Naser was detained by a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from a house in Mirpur DOHS on March 30.

According to the case documents, BNP leaders and activists began gathering in Dhaka on December 10, 2022, as part of a party programme. Ahead of the event, police and Awami League supporters allegedly created a disturbance outside the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan on December 7. They reportedly entered the BNP office, charged batons, and opened fire, critically injuring Makbul, who later died in hospital.

The case was filed on September 30, 2024.
