CKDU hospital extortion case: Ex-Juba Dal leader among 7 arrested
Members of law enforcement have arrested former Jubo Dal leader Moyeen Uddin Moyeen and six of his associates in connection with an extortion case targeting the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKDU) Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.
The arrest was confirmed on Monday (April 13) morning by Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, Director of the legal and media wing of RAB. He said that RAB had arrested Moyeen, the main accused in the high-profile CKDU hospital extortion case, along with a total of seven individuals. Further legal procedures are underway in this regard.
On April 11, the OT in-charge of CKDU Hospital, Abu Hanif, filed an extortion case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, naming Moyeen as the number one accused.
According to the case statement, Moyeen and his associates had allegedly been demanding Tk 500,000 for a long time. When their demand for money was refused, the accused allegedly threatened the complainant in various ways.
The complaint states that on the morning of April 10, Moyeen and his associates went to the complainant’s house on Road No. 3 in Shyamoli under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station and asked him to open the door.
When his wife opened the door, Moyeen allegedly demanded immediate payment of Tk 500,000 as extortion and threatened harm to both the complainant and his wife if the money was not paid. When she refused, the accused reportedly created a disturbance and began shouting.
Sensing the situation escalating, the complainant—who was at home—moved to another room and called his younger brother, Monir Talukder, who was at the hospital, asking him to come home urgently.
Later, when his brother arrived, Moyeen and around 7–8 unidentified individuals allegedly misrepresented the incident and gathered more people. They then assembled about 50–60 individuals in front of CKDU Hospital and attempted to create chaos. They stayed in front of the hospital, shouted slogans, used abusive language, and allegedly attempted to destabilise the situation.
