Pahela Baishakh today
Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year 1433, is being celebrated across the country, including in Dhaka, on Tuesday with much festivity.
It is one of the most colourful festivals through which the Bengali people bid farewell to the old year and welcome the New Year.
A huge number of people are expected to join the New Year festivities across the country, particularly in the capital.
The government has taken strict security measures nationwide to ensure a peaceful and smooth celebration of the Bengali New Year.
On this occasion, people from all walks of life wear traditional Bengali attire. Young women wear white sarees with red borders and adorn themselves with bangles, flowers, and “tips,” while men wear white pyjamas with panjabis or kurtas.
On the eve of the day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in separate messages, extended their heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the people of the country, as well as to Bengali-speaking communities around the world, on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh.
In his message, the president called upon the countrymen to forget their differences and build a non-communal, united, and just society.
The head of state said that Pahela Baishakh is celebrated as a day of joy and unity for all, transcending differences of race, religion, and caste.
In his message marking the day, the prime minister said that Pahela Baishakh represents the nation’s history, culture, and a unique symbol of self-identity.
He noted that, for centuries, the day has returned each year with a call for renewal, inspiring people to leave behind past burdens and move forward with fresh hopes and aspirations.
