Kamal Majumder tears up in court, quits AL
Former State Minister for Industry, Kamal Ahmed Majumder, tearfully sought justice from the judge in the courtroom on Monday morning. During the hearing, he announced that he would no longer engage in politics with the Awami League.
He was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka around 10:00 am to have him shown as arrested in a murder case filed at Kafrul Police Station.
After being placed in the dock, Kamal Majumder addressed the judge in a tearful voice. He said, "I am 76 years old, diabetic, and 70% of my vision is impaired. I have no information about my family and am not allowed to meet them. I will never engage in politics with the Awami League again. I am no longer in any position within the party. I have resigned even from the primary membership."
He further stated, "I appeal to you (the judge) for justice. I am being tortured with case after case. I should be spending time with my grandchildren, but instead, I am being tortured in jail. I have no option but to call upon Allah. The prison authorities are not providing me with a digital Quran, diabetes medication, or a blood sugar measuring device."
Following this, the hearing on the arrest request for the accused began. The court approved the arrest of six individuals, including former adviser to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, and Kamal Ahmed Majumder, in connection with a murder case related to the anti-discrimination student movement in Kafrul Police Station.
The other individuals arrested were former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam, former IGP of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, and former IGP AKM Shahidul Haque. The arrest order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra.
After leaving the dock, Kamal Ahmed Majumder told reporters, "I have completely withdrawn from politics and resigned from the Awami League’s general membership. I hold no party position. At the age of 76, it is not possible to do politics. We want new leadership to emerge."
Following his statement, he and the other accused were taken to the CMM Court’s lockup.
Kamal Majumder was arrested from a house in Gulshan, Dhaka, around 12:30 am on October 19. Since then, he has been shown arrested in several murder and attempted murder cases.
