Ex-AL MP Aftab Uddin arrested in Rangpur

Police arrested former Nilphamari-1 Awami League MP and freedom fighter Aftab Uddin Sarkar in Rangpur early Thursday. He was arrested from a house in the New Senpara area of the city around 12:45 am.
According to the police, there are three cases against him, including allegations of using illegal firearms—both domestic and other weapons—to suppress peaceful student and public protests against discrimination. He also faces charges of assault, attempted murder, and murder.
Based on a tip-off, an operation was conducted, led by Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Majid Ali. Aftab Uddin Sarkar, who had been hiding at a relative’s house in New Senpara, was arrested, and he was then taken to the police station under tight security.
Confirming the arrest, Md. Majid Ali stated that Aftab Uddin Sarkar faces three cases, one of which involves a murder during the anti-discrimination movement. These cases are under investigation. One of the cases is in Rangpur, and he will be shown arrested in that case. The police commissioner also mentioned that Aftab Uddin Sarkar will be presented in court on Thursday (March 6).
