NCP among 6 parties await EC’s final registration approval

The Election Commission (EC) is set to complete the registration process ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election. So far, six new political parties are expected to receive final approval for registration, including the National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party, Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party, and Bangladesh Jatiya League.

Once signed by the commission, a public notice will be issued regarding the newly registered parties.

According to EC sources, following field-level verification of 22 political parties, six have been finalised for registration. The concerned branch signed the documents on Sunday (21 September). The file will be forwarded to the commission for approval on Monday (22 September). However, the commission may add or remove names from the branch’s proposal. A public notice will be issued only after the commission’s final decision.

The source further said that 10 other parties will undergo fresh investigation, while the applications of six others have been rejected. Of the 10 parties, nine will face fresh field-level verification, while one may be reviewed by a senior EC official.

Earlier, on 14 and 15 September, EC Additional Secretary Ali Newaz conducted hearings of 20 parties, excluding two. As in previous years, the EC invited applications for registration of new political parties ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election. A total of 143 new political parties applied for registration. As none initially met the requirements, the EC allowed them extra time to address deficiencies. Of them, 84 parties—including the National Citizen Party—responded, while others did not. Among the 84, 62 submitted documents but still failed to meet the conditions. The EC later conducted field-level investigations and hearings for the remaining 22 parties, including the National Citizen Party.

The 22 parties include: Forward Party, Aam Janatar Dal, Bangladesh Gonotantrik Party, Bangladesh Reformist Party, Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Socialist Party (Marxist), Moulik Bangla, Bangladesh Justice and Development Party, Jatiya Janata Party, Janatar Dal, Janata Party Bangladesh, Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party, National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Jatiya League, Bhashani Janashakti Party, Bangladesh Bekar Mukti Parishad, Bangladesh Communist Party (Marxist), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD–Shahjahan Siraj), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Bekar Samaj (BABES), Bangladesh Solution Party, and Notun Bangladesh Party.

As per law, to qualify for registration, a political party must have a central committee, committees in at least one-third of districts and in 100 upazilas, and proof of support from at least 200 voters in each committee. Additionally, a party may qualify if it has a former member of parliament or secured five percent of the votes in the previous election. Along with these key conditions, several other rules and requirements must also be met.
