Final list of candidates to be announced in due time: Jamaat amir
Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has said that the final list of party-nominated candidates will be announced in due time.
He said, “We had announced the candidates' list regionally a year ago. The final list will be announced on time by us, InshaAllah, on behalf of the central committee. Since we will not contest the election alone and will include many others, we will consider all aspects in the interest of the country and the nation and announce the candidates finally and timely, InshaAllah.”
Shafiqur Rahman returned to Bangladesh early Tuesday morning (November 4) from the United Kingdom. He spoke at a brief press briefing at the VIP gate of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 6:00 am. He had left the country on October 19 for visits to Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
During his stay in London, it was rumoured that he met BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, but there has been no report to confirm this. When asked, he said, “You may have heard, but I haven’t.”
Regarding differences of opinion among anti-fascist political parties, he said, “Let there be differences of opinion, but let there be no conflicts. There will be diversity of views. This is the beauty of democracy. We respect everyone’s views. Every party will have its own perspective, and that is normal. It does not mean that the country has become unstable due to differences of opinion; I do not accept that.”
On the government’s appeal to political parties to discuss and reach a consensus within a week, he said, “The government has not imposed a deadline; they have requested it. If political parties can reach a consensus, it will be good for the country. We ourselves issued a call first. Our Nayeb-e-Amir Taher has called for open discussions to find solutions in the interest of the country and the nation. I hope others will respond to this call.”
Also present at the briefing were Nayeb-e-Amir Professor Mujibur Rahman and Maulana ANM Shamsul Islam, Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary Generals ATM Masum, Maulana Abdul Halim, Rafiqul Islam Khan, and Hamidur Rahman Azad.
