Manna's nomination for Bogura-2 rejected
Election officials have rejected the nomination papers of Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, a hopeful for the Bogura-2 (Shibganj) constituency in the upcoming national polls.
Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Md Tawfiqur Rahman announced this on Friday afternoon, January 2, after verification of the nomination papers, citing there are inconsistencies in the information provided in Manna’s affidavit.
The nomination papers of former Jatiya Party (JaPa) MP Shariful Islam Jinnah were also turned down today.
However, aggrieved candidates will be able to appeal before the Election Commission against this decision, sources in the Commission said.
Earlier on December 24, the High Court rejected a writ petition filed by Manna, seeking a directive to remove his name from the list of loan defaulters – effectively barring him from contesting the 13th parliamentary elections.
On December 29, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court suspended his name from the list of loan defaulters.
According to lawyers, the court decision removes any legal barrier to his participation in the upcoming elections.
