Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Jamaat-backed 10-party alliance nominee for the Dhaka-11 constituency, has said an environment conducive to voting has emerged in the country after a long time.

He made the remarks before beginning his electioneering in Natunbazar-Bhatara area in the capital on Saturday, January 24, expressing hope that voters would be able to go to polling centres without fear and exercise their franchise freely.

“After 16 long years, an election is being held in which people have the opportunity to exercise their voting rights,” Nahid said, urging voters to take part in the polls.

He alleged that major political party has violated the electoral code of conduct by attempting to buy votes through so-called ‘family cards’.

Nahid also alleged that unrealistic promises are being made to mislead voters, claiming such assurances have no possibility of implementation.

The NCP convener further alleged that an atmosphere of fear has been created among voters in different areas and called on the authorities to ensure that voters are not intimidated.

Stressing the importance of a fair election scheduled for February 12, he instructed party activists to remain vigilant at polling centres to protect the voting process.
