Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are arriving in large processions at the venue of a public rally in Chattogram, ahead of a scheduled address by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday, January 25.

From early morning, supporters from different parts of the city and surrounding areas have been marching to the historic Polo Ground, chanting party slogans as they join the gathering.

BNP leaders and activists from Chattogram district and its upazilas are taking part in the processions. Slogans such as “Soldiers of Zia, unite and fight” and “Bangladesh first, conspiracies are not over” were heard during the marches.

Shahjalal Sagar, member secretary of the Naikhongchhari Upazila unit of the BNP-affiliated Krishak Dal, said he left Ghumdhum at around 3:30 am and reached the rally venue by 8:30 am.

“I came early to see our leader Tarique Rahman from close quarters and to secure a place near the stage,” he said.

BNP-nominated candidate from Bandarban constituency 300, Saching Prue Jerry, said leaders and activists from different parts of the district arrived in Chattogram to ensure the success of the rally.

“Many activists from nearby upazilas reached the city last night. We expect a turnout of at least one million people,” he said, thanking party supporters from Bandarban for attending the programme.
