DUCSU VP candidate expelled from dorm, handed over to police
Jalal Ahmed Jalal, an independent vice president candidate in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections and a student of the Department of Television and Film, has been expelled from Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall over allegations of attacking a roommate. An attempted murder case has also been filed against him.
The incident occurred around midnight on Monday. The injured student, Robiul Haque, of the 2018-19 session of the Department of Political Science, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Following the incident, the university administration handed the accused over to the police.
Mohsin Hall provost Md Sirajul Islam said Jalal was expelled from the hall due to his violent behaviour and added that steps would also be taken to revoke his student status.
Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge (OC) Khalid Monsur told Jago News that the university had filed an attempted murder case against Jalal Ahmed, who has since been sent to court.
Robiul Haque said, “Around 12:30 am, Jalal came into my room, switched on the light, and made noise, which disturbed my sleep. I told him that I would have to go to the library in the morning and asked him to keep quiet. He became angry, verbally abused me, and called me illegal and an outsider. When I protested, he attacked me. I tried to defend myself as best as I could.”
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said action would be taken against Jalal Ahmed according to the law and added that the incident would not affect the upcoming DUCSU elections.
Meanwhile, students have expressed anger over the incident and demanded the resignation of the Mohsin Hall provost.
The proctor said, “I have seen the students myself, and they are demanding the resignation of the hall administration, particularly the provost. If they formally present their demands to the vice-chancellor on Wednesday, appropriate measures will be taken regarding their demands.”
