UN recognizes Bangladesh as developing country
Bangladesh has graduated to the list of developing countries from the least-developed country (LDC) status.
The Committee for development policy (CPD) of United Nations on Friday handed over the letter of this announcement to Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, Masud Bin Momen.
As per UN’s requirement, a LDC listed country can be upgraded in the list of Developing countries through meeting at least two of these three criteria-Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, Human Assets Index (HAI) and Economic Vulnerability Index (EVI).
But, Bangladesh already has met the three criteria to be included in the list of developing countries getting out of the list of Least Developed Countries.
As per requirement of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of United Nations, per capita income of a country need to be $1,230 or above while Bangladesh’s GNI per capita is now $1,272. In terms of the HAI, a country must have a score of 66 or above. Bangladesh’s score is now 72.8.
Besides, in the economic vulnerability index (EVI), a country’s score has to be 32 or below while Bangladesh’s score is now 25.
After 47 years of Independence, Bangladesh achieved the formal recognition. Experts believe that the achievement will guided the country to go ahead.
