Thousands of workers staged demonstrations by blocking the Chandra-Nabinagar road in Gazipur on Wednesday afternoon, January 22, to demand the reopening of 16 closed factories inside the Beximco Industrial Park.

They barricaded the road around 3:30pm and at one stage, they torched at least four buses, causing vehicular movement suspended for hours.

The agitated labourers also beat up Deepto TV’s Gazipur correspondent Jahangir Alam, Pratidiner Bangladesh’s Kaliakair correspondent Abu Sayeed, and BanglaVision’s photo journalist Amir Hossain Real while covering the blockade.

Being informed, the law enforcers rushed to the spot and tried to remove the demonstrators from the road. According to the latest information, the workers blocked the road at about 6:30pm.

Jahirul Islam, superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, said they are trying to remove the workers from the road.

Earlier on Tuesday, January 21, thousands of workers held a mass rally at the Suncity ground at Kashimpur in the city, demanding the reopening of 16 closed factories inside the Beximco Industrial Park.
