Bangla Academy to revoke award for links to mass killings

Bangla Academy Director General (DG) Professor Mohammad Azam has announced that any recipient of the Bangla Academy Literary Award found to be involved in mass killings or anti-people politics will have their prize revoked.

Azam made the statement during a press conference at the Secretariat on Sunday, January 26, where Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki was also present.

"Following the recent announcement of the Bangla Academy Literary Award, we have seen a variety of reactions, which we have taken into consideration. As a result, we have suspended the list of announced awardees," Azam said.

He added that the list is under review, with particular attention given to allegations against a few recipients. "If we find evidence of anyone’s direct involvement in mass killings or anti-people politics, we will certainly cancel their award," he stated.

Addressing dissatisfaction with Bangla Academy’s current situation and governance, Azam emphasised the need to re-examine the laws, rules, and provisions that were established long ago.
