Khalilur optimistic on repatriating 1.8 lakh rohingyas before next Eid
Dr Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative on Rohingya Affairs to Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, expressed optimism about the repatriation of 180,000 Rohingyas to their home country before next year's Eid.
He made this statement during a press briefing on Tuesday, April 8, at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital.
Khalilur Rahman emphasised the importance of ensuring the security of the Rohingyas before their repatriation. He highlighted that establishing peace in the Arakan region is crucial for this process, as they cannot be sent back while the region is in a state of war. Therefore, a ceasefire between the two parties in the country is necessary.
He also mentioned that cooperation from the United Nations and the international community is essential to ensure the safety of the returnees. Without guaranteed security, sending them back would be like throwing them into the fire.
The briefing was attended by the Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir, and Assistant Press Secretary Naeem Ali.
