3 arrested in Primeasia University student murder case
Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the fatal stabbing of Zahidul Islam Parvez on the campus of Primeasia University. The arrestees are Md Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal, 19, Alvi Hossain Junayed, 19, and Al Amin Sani, 19.
Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rasel Saroar confirmed the arrests to Jago News on Monday morning.
He stated that although the three are not named in the case’s First Information Report (FIR), they were present at the crime scene and were identified through CCTV footage.
The OC added that the trio was arrested during early morning raids in the Mohakhali Wireless Gate area and nearby locations. They will be presented before the court with a remand plea.
According to police, interrogation under remand will help identify others involved in the murder and uncover the motive behind the killing.
On the night of April 19, the victim’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a murder case with Banani Police Station over Parvez’s death. The FIR names eight individuals, including Primeasia University students and outsiders.
The named accused are Meheraz Islam (20), Abu Zohor Giffari Pias (20), Md Mahathir Hasan (20), Sobhan Niaz Tushar (24), Hridoy Miazi (23), Rifat (21), Ali (21), and Fahim (22). Additionally, 25 to 30 unidentified individuals have also been accused.
According to the FIR, the incident began with a dispute after a group of students allegedly laughed while looking at a girl. The matter was brought to the attention of Textile Department Lecturer Shusma Chhoayati and Psychology Department’s Abul Hashem, who took both parties to the university's proctor office.
There, in the presence of English Department teacher Moshiur Rahman, the issue was reportedly resolved, and everyone left the campus peacefully.
However, the FIR states that around 4:40 pm, while Parvez and his friends were conversing in front of the university on Road 17 under Banani Police Station, the accused and others—armed with knives, machetes, and sticks—suddenly attacked them.
As Parvez and his friend Tarikul Islam tried to re-enter the university for safety, Meheraz Islam, Abu Zohor Giffari Pias, Mahathir Hasan, and others caught them and began assaulting them. At one point, Pias and Mahathir held Parvez tightly while Meheraz stabbed him. Tarikul was also attacked with sharp weapons, sustaining injuries to his head and below his left elbow.
