Depression over Bay brings rain to Dhaka, other parts of country
A well-marked low over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, leading to rainfall in various parts of the country, including the capital, Dhaka.
The sky over Dhaka began to cloud over on Wednesday (May 28) afternoon, and some areas of the city experienced rainfall later that night. On Thursday (May 29) morning, the rain was accompanied by gusty winds in the capital.
Meanwhile, river ports in Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to hoist riverine warning signal number two.
According to a bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the warning for inland river ports will remain valid until 1:00 pm on Thursday.
In association with the rain or thundershowers, temporary south or south-westerly squalls with wind speeds of 60–80 kph are likely to occur over the regions of Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar, the bulletin stated.
Elsewhere in the country, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary south or south-westerly gusty or squally winds with speeds of 45–60 kph are also likely. River ports in those regions have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number one.
Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman said on Wednesday that rainfall is expected across the country for three consecutive days from Thursday until May 31.
He said that from Thursday, most areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Additionally, some places across the country may witness moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall.
