The government has decided to declare August 5 a public holiday to mark the Student-People Uprising Day.

The day will be officially observed every year.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Council of Advisers held today at the State Guest House Jamuna.

After the meeting, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki announced the decision at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy.

Farooki said a preliminary decision has been taken to celebrate August 5 as the Student-People Uprising Day.

He added that the decision will be presented at the cabinet meeting next Sunday, and a gazette notification will be issued on Monday to formalise it.

The adviser stated that August 5 will be recognised as a national day, and the Student-People Uprising Day will be commemorated annually in the future.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was present at the press briefing.
