UPDF leader shot dead in Khagrachhari
A local leader of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-democratic) was shot dead allegedly by unidentified assailants in Panchhari of Khagrachhari district on Friday morning.
The deceased, Niti Datta Chakma, 40, was a coordinator of Panchhari upazila UPDF.
The incident occurred around 8:30 am in the Sutkarma Para area of sadar union.
According to locals, a group of assailants opened fire on Niti, leaving him critically injured on the spot. Locals, later, rescued him from the spot and took him to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Confirming the matter, Panchhari Police Station officer-in-charge Md Ferdous Wahid said that police rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the shooting, but the victim died before receiving treatment.
Following the incident, UPDF (democratic) blamed the faction led by Prasit Khisa for the killing.
Denying the allegation, UPDF spokesperson Angya Marma said that the group had no involvement in the incident.
Khagrachhari Police Station officer-in-charge Md Kai Kislu said that the body has been kept at the hospital for further procedures.
Legal action is underway, he added.
