Police unhappy with current uniform, review on cards: Salahuddin
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that members of the police force are not satisfied with their current uniform, indicating that the government may consider a change.
He made the remarks on Saturday, March 28, while addressing the training closing parade of the 43rd BCS trainee Assistant Police Superintendent batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy.
“From what I have gathered through discussions with officers at different levels, many police members are not satisfied with the existing uniform,” he said. “I will raise the matter at the highest level of the government so that the force can have a uniform that reflects tradition. A decision will be taken, InshaAllah.”
Salahuddin, who is also a member of the BNP Standing Committee, said the government wants to reshape the image of the police as a people-friendly force rather than one influenced by political interests.
“The police will not be a baton-wielding enforcer for any party or group. Our goal is to ensure public safety and build a modern, service-oriented and humanitarian police force,” he said, referring to commitments made in the party’s election manifesto.
He added that steps have already been taken to strengthen the force, including increasing manpower and working towards the formation of an independent and strong Police Reform Commission.
At the event, Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu, Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir, Police Academy Principal Additional IGP GM Azizul Rahman, Deputy Principal DIG Basu Deb Banik and other senior officials were present.
A total of 72 trainee assistant police superintendents took part in this year’s training graduation, including 66 men and six women.
Trainee Assistant Police Superintendent Ahmed Sadman Shakib commanded the parade. Md Fahim Faisal received top honours, winning both the Best Probationer and Best Academic awards. The Best in Field Activities award went to Md Arafat Hossain, while Shaon Reza was recognised for Best Horsemanship and Bapi Kumar Das for Best Shooting.
