Fakhrul calls for unity and democratic reforms

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasised the need for unity and collective action to navigate Bangladesh’s current political challenges, urging all stakeholders to carefully review reform proposals that have been shared with political parties.
Speaking at an iftar mahfil organised by the BNP at the Ladies Club in Dhaka on Wednesday (March 19), Fakhrul stated, “I request everyone to observe these proposals in depth and then share their opinions so that we can move forward together.”
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he said, “We are going through a very difficult time. Even though we have a fascism-free environment, we are still struggling to find the direction of democracy. A democratic Bangladesh is the main aspiration of our nation.”
The event, attended by leaders from various political parties and prominent figures, was organized to honor and engage diverse voices in the country’s political discourse. BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman joined the program virtually from London, while Mirza Fakhrul extended greetings to all attendees on behalf of the party.
Fakhrul stressed the importance of unity in overcoming the current political impasse. “Unity is essential at this moment,” he said. “Let us resolve problems through discussions and mutual understanding.” He assured that if voted into power, the BNP would implement its 31-point agenda, which outlines reforms aimed at addressing key national issues.
Iterating the necessity of democracy, Fakhrul said, “There is no alternative to the path of democracy. I am explicitly advocating for early elections because only a government elected by the people can ensure accountability and bring about necessary reforms.”
Leaders from various political parties also spoke at the event, underscoring the need for collaboration and reform. Among those who addressed the gathering were: Dr. Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Nayeb-e-Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, Nahid Islam, Convener of Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP), Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Convener of Nagorik Oikya, Nurul Haque Nur, President of Ganaodhikar Parishad, Mostafa Jamal Haider, Chairman of Jatiya Party, Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan.
Each speaker highlighted the importance of restoring democratic governance and fostering unity among political forces.
