Jamaat chief says no polls without reforms and Hasina’s trial

Bangladeshis will not accept any election unless two key demands are fulfilled – a visible and fair trial of Sheikh Hasina and the implementation of essential political reforms, said Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday.
He made these remarks while addressing a public rally at the Lalmonirhat Collectorate Ground, emphasising the need for systemic changes to ensure free and fair polls.
Dr Shafiqur urged the Chief Adviser to resist holding elections influenced by "black money" and muscle power, stressing the importance of creating a level playing field. "The people of Bangladesh demand transparency and fairness in the electoral process," he said.
He also highlighted the necessity of political reforms to restore public trust in governance. "Without addressing these core issues, no election can reflect the true will of the people," he added.
On foreign policy, the Jamaat chief emphasised maintaining diplomatic relations with India based on mutual respect, equality, and good neighbourliness. "If Bangladesh prospers, our neighbours will benefit too. But if our wellbeing is compromised, India must ask whether theirs can remain unaffected," he remarked, signalling the interconnectedness of regional stability.
Dr Shafiqur condemned the ongoing influence of "ill-politicians" who continue to engage in extortion and property grabbing despite the fall of fascism. He pledged that under Jamaat's leadership, women would be respected, protected, and provided employment opportunities.
"We want a country free from the divisions of 'supporter' and 'opponent'. We reject the notions of 'minority' and 'majority', which have long been used to oppress us. Now, men and women alike will help build this nation," he declared, calling for unity among all citizens.
The Jamaat leader underscored the importance of empowering the youth to become productive contributors to society. "Millions are now saying—they will sacrifice their lives, but not the country's sovereignty. We did not fight West Pakistan only to be subjugated again. We want to live as citizens of a truly independent nation," he asserted.
He also promised to prioritise development in Lalmonirhat, including implementing the long-stalled Teesta Mega Plan. Additionally, he called for the establishment of an agricultural university and a local airport in Lalmonirhat to address unemployment and boost regional growth.
Earlier in the day, party supporters from across Lalmonirhat and surrounding districts joined the rally in colourful processions, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The event showcased widespread enthusiasm for Jamaat's vision of reform and progress.
