EC to bring reforms those fall under its jurisdiction before polls: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said the Election Commission, EC, will itself conduct the polls related reforms which fall under its jurisdiction before the national elections.
He told the reporters after a meeting with newly assigned Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Susan Ryle, at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon on Thursday, April 24.
He said the Australian envoy wanted to know from the Election Commission about its preparations and major reforms for the next general election and the commission informed her about those in details.
“I told her (Australian High Commissioner) that the UNDP is supporting us and you see it. After seeing, if you want to be involved in any area, you can,” CEC Nasir said.
Replying to a question from the journalists, he said, “We are considering voter registration a major task and we are about to complete it.”
The EC has extended deadline for registration of new political party for two more months and it is trying to amend code of conduct, the CEC noted.
When asked him whether the EC will wait for National Consensus Commission’s opinion, he responded, saying, “Those which are under our (EC) jurisdiction, we will complete those before election.”
“Political things are related with some reforms which the National Consensus Commission will do,” he added.
