Russia seeks clarity on election timeline in BNP meeting
Russian Ambassador Alexander Grigorievich Khozin met with senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders on Sunday, May 4, to discuss bilateral ties and inquire about the timeline for Bangladesh’s national elections.
The hour-long meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid attended.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Amir Khosru said Russia expressed keen interest in deepening trade, investment, and energy cooperation, noting Russia’s energy wealth and cultural heritage.
“They asked about the elections, wanting to know how soon they will be held,” Khosru revealed, underscoring Russia’s emphasis on a credible elected government for stronger bilateral decisions.
The BNP has been pushing for elections by December 2025, aligning with public demand for democratic governance.
The discussions also covered cultural exchanges and energy sector collaboration, building on ties dating back to Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.
Khosru highlighted Russia’s interest in facilitating market access and resolving trade barriers to boost commerce.
