Chhatra League leaders threatened Hasnat prior to attack: NCP
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that several leaders and activists from the banned student organization Chhatra League issued threats on social media against Hasnat Abdullah, the party’s chief organizer for the southern region, prior to Sunday’s attack on him in Gazipur.
The claim was made in a press release signed by the party’s Joint Office Secretary, Saleh Uddin Sifat, issued at 12:56 am on Monday.
In the statement, the NCP said, “On Sunday evening, in the Chowrasta area of Gazipur, Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer for the southern region of the National Citizen Party (NCP), was attacked by accomplices of the fallen fascist regime. We have observed that, prior to this attack, several activists from the banned fascist student organization, Chhatra League, had issued threats and warned of retaliation against Hasnat Abdullah on social media yesterday.”
The party expressed deep concern, citing findings from a survey by BanglaFact, the fact-checking unit of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), which reported that over the past nine months, 36 attacks have been carried out against individuals and families involved in the student-mass uprising. These attacks reportedly resulted in 89 injuries and one fatality.
The party further alleged that the interim government has failed to take prompt and effective action to bring the perpetrators of these attacks—and those responsible for the July uprising killings—to justice. The NCP also criticized law enforcement agencies, citing a pattern of unprofessionalism and negligence in handling such incidents.
According to the NCP, the delay and failure to take decisive steps against the Awami League as a fascist organisation responsible for the July massacre have contributed significantly to the recurrence of such attacks.
Meanwhile, in protest of the attack on Hasnat Abdullah and demanding justice, NCP activists staged rallies and protest gatherings in various parts of the country, including Dhaka Metropolitan, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Barisal, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Cumilla, Kishoreganj, Faridpur, Bogura, Rangpur Metropolitan, and Keraniganj Upazila.
The party has issued a strong demand that a clear investigation be launched within 24 hours, and that those responsible for the attack—and the July massacre—be swiftly brought to justice.
