Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said neither he nor his party would engage in corruption, nor would they allow anyone else to do so.

“We will not collect illegal donations, and we will not allow anyone to do so. We will not commit corruption, and we will not allow corruption either,” he told a rally of the Jamaat-led 10-party alliance as the chief guest at the historic Gore-e-Shahid Maidan in Dinajpur on Friday afternoon, January 23.

On the second day of election campaigning, the Jamaat Amir arrived in Panchagarh from Dhaka at about 11:00 am. After attending a public meeting there, he joined the Dinajpur rally at around 3:30 pm.

He said Jamaat-e-Islami wants to build a people-friendly Bangladesh with public participation. “We want a Bangladesh free from conflict, where looted money is not used to build ‘Begum Para’ abroad. Those who have siphoned off money and built Begum Para will be brought back and brought to justice,” he added.

Highlighting Dinajpur’s contribution to the national economy, Dr Shafiqur said the district supplies one-third of the country’s food and pledged to establish modern agriculture-based industries there. He also promised to set up storage facilities for potatoes and litchis and said Dinajpur city would be upgraded to a city corporation to expand civic facilities.

The Jamaat Chief said his party would ensure improved healthcare by establishing medical colleges in every district and enhance the quality of medical services. He also pledged to build quality educational institutions from the grassroots level and ensure a safe and liveable environment for all citizens.

Referring to women, he said, “Women are mothers. We will ensure a safe environment for them both at home and at the workplace.” He added that Jamaat wants to build a humane and enlightened Bangladesh where justice cannot be bought with money.

“We want a Bangladesh without the clatter of weapons, where people can move freely and safely,” he said, adding that Jamaat would vote “yes” in the referendum without any exception.

He reiterated that if his party comes to power, storage facilities for potatoes and litchis would be established in Dinajpur to ensure fair prices for farmers’ produce.

Chaired by Dinajpur district Jamaat Amir Principal Anisur Rahman and conducted by district secretary Muhaddis Dr Enamul Haque, it was also addressed by Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim.

Chhatra Shibir central president Nurul Islam Saddam, NCP chief coordinator and 10-party alliance candidate for Dinajpur-5 Dr Abdul Ahad, Rajshahi University former vice-president Mostakur Rahman Zahid, and Jamaat candidates Matiur Rahman (Dinajpur-1), Principal Afzalul Anam (Dinajpur-2), Mainul Alam (Dinajpur-3 Sadar), Aftab Uddin Mollah (Dinajpur-4) and Anwarul Islam (Dinajpur-6), among others also addressed the rally.

Leaders and activists of the 10-party alliance from all 13 upazilas of Dinajpur district were present at the rally.
