Bulbul poised to lead BCB
Speculation about a change in the presidency of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been circulating for days, with former national cricket team captain Aminul Islam Bulbul frequently mentioned on social media as a potential candidate.
While no official confirmation had surfaced initially, recent developments suggest the rumours are gaining traction.
On Wednesday night, sources revealed that the government has been working to replace the current BCB president, Faruk Ahmed.
In a meeting at the residence of Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, Faruk was reportedly urged to resign.
Although Faruk raised specific concerns during the discussion, the adviser did not address them.
Faruk has since requested a day or two to consider his resignation.
It is now understood that the government intends to appoint Aminul Islam Bulbul as interim president. The speculation intensified after Bulbul returned to Bangladesh a few days ago.
When contacted by Jago News around Thursday noon at the airport, where he was receiving his wife returning from Jashore, Bulbul was unable to comment due to time constraints.
However, earlier in the day, Bulbul confirmed to a prominent media outlet that he is prepared to take on a leadership role.
“I haven’t been formally asked to assume the BCB presidency yet. I wasn’t present at the meeting between the sports advisor and the board president. However, 10-15 days ago, the adviser contacted me, expressing their desire for me to contribute to Bangladesh cricket in some capacity. I agreed,” Bulbul said.
His statement suggests that the government is determined to replace Faruk, though the process will be handled cautiously to comply with International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations. Any perception of government interference could risk an ICC ban. It now seems almost certain that Aminul Islam Bulbul will assume the role of BCB president.
Previously, there were rumours that Bulbul might be appointed as the BCB’s CEO, but he dismissed these claims as baseless. “There was no discussion about becoming the CEO, let alone any talk of financial matters,” he clarified.
