In a stunning turn of events, Faruque Ahmed’s tenure as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) came to an abrupt end on Thursday, May 29, 2025, following a day of swirling rumours and mounting pressure.

What began as whispers of resignation or removal culminated in a government notification that stripped Faruque of his position, marking a dramatic shift in the leadership of Bangladesh’s beloved sport.

The day started with speculation about Faruque’s future, fuelled by a directive from Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan urging him to step down.

Defiant, Faruque declared by afternoon that he would not resign voluntarily, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown.

His resolve, however, was swiftly challenged when eight of the BCB’s ten directors escalated the crisis by submitting a no-confidence motion against him in a letter to the Youth and Sports Adviser.

The directors’ bold move, accusing Faruque of leadership failures, left little room for doubt about his precarious position.

By evening, the government acted decisively, issuing a notification that relieved Faruque of his role as a director in the BCB on National Sports Council (NSC) quota.

Under BCB regulations, the loss of his NSC directorship automatically terminated his presidency, sealing his exit in a matter of hours.

Faruque’s ousting marks a critical juncture for Bangladesh cricket, a sport that commands immense passion and pride across the nation. The no-confidence motion, backed by a majority of the board’s directors, reflects deep divisions within the BCB, raising questions about governance, transparency, and the future direction of the sport.

With Bangladesh aiming to maintain its growing stature on the global cricket stage, the leadership vacuum left by Faruque’s departure poses both challenges and opportunities.
