Humankind has always been fascinated by space. Gazing at the stars from Earth, many dream of floating in the vast expanse of the universe. Yet, NASA’s chief astronaut, Joseph M Acaba, has a profoundly different perspective: “Space is not the most beautiful place; Earth is the most beautiful. This world is infinitely more captivating than space.”

Acaba, a veteran of numerous space missions and two spacewalks, shared his insights with students at BRAC University during a special event on Sunday, December 15.

Speaking at the event, titled “From Earth to Orbit: An Astronaut’s Tale,” he explained why Earth’s beauty surpasses that of space.

Mistakes on Earth vs mistakes in space

“If you make a mistake on Earth, you can fix it. There is endless room for growth and second chances here,” Acaba said. “But in space, even the smallest mistake can mean death. The stakes are life and death—a game we must take seriously.”

His message was clear: while space exploration is awe-inspiring, Earth is irreplaceable. “I don’t think any other planet is yet suitable for human habitation,” he cautioned. “We must do everything we can to preserve and protect our beautiful planet.”

Lessons from space for aspiring astronauts

Addressing an audience of captivated students, Acaba shared his experiences from 306 days spent in space, including the challenges and triumphs of living in the void. “Many have told me that I am their inspiration. But I feel inspired by being among you,” he said, acknowledging the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm.

Encouraging students to pursue their dreams, Acaba emphasised the value of education. “Focus on your studies. Education is the key to turning your dreams into reality. For those dreaming of becoming astronauts, keep an eye on NASA’s website—it offers countless opportunities and valuable advice.”

He also highlighted the importance of learning from failure. “Mistakes teach us vital lessons. Never be afraid of making them,” he advised.

NASA’s vision and global cooperation

Discussing NASA’s future goals, Acaba said, “NASA’s mission is to explore beyond the unknown. But to achieve this, we need global collaboration. When countries come together, we can accomplish remarkable things.”

He expressed optimism about the potential of the BRAC University students. “I believe that soon, one of these students will join NASA’s Artemis Squad,” he said, referring to NASA’s ambitious lunar exploration programme.

A memorable event at BRAC University

The event, organised by BRAC University, was attended by faculty, students, and special guests. Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumder, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences, delivered the welcome speech. Scott E Hartman, Director of Public Engagement from the US Embassy in Dhaka, and Khairul Bashar, Director of the Office of Communications, also addressed the audience.

In his closing remarks, BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Syed Farhat Anwar encouraged students to pursue space research, saying, “I believe that one day, the names of BRAC University students will be among the list of astronauts.”
