Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has said that despite the imposition of a 20 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods, the country will remain competitive in the US market.

He added that there is no possibility of Bangladesh’s exports to the United States being disrupted.

However, he noted that Bangladesh had expected the tariff to be set below 20 percent.

The adviser made these remarks in response to a statement issued by the White House, which announced the imposition of the 20 percent tariff on Bangladeshi products on Thursday, following the conclusion of the third round of trade talks between Bangladesh and the United States.

Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, shared the Commerce Adviser’s reaction in a Facebook post on Friday.

He also mentioned that the United States has imposed a 25 percent tariff on India, 20 percent on Sri Lanka and Vietnam, and 19 percent on Cambodia and Pakistan.
