MPO teachers threaten fast-unto-death if demands not met

MPO-listed teachers of non-government educational institutions have threatened to begin fast-unto-death to press home their three demands, including a 20 per cent rise in house rent allowance.

They made the threat from a sit-in programme on the road near the High Court in Dhaka on Tuesday evening, October 14.

Earlier this afternoon, the police obstructed them near the High Court while marching towards the Bangladesh Secretariat from the Central Shaheed Minar as previously announced.

"Today we will stay here (in front of the High Court), and if our demands are not met by 11:00am tomorrow, we will go to Shahbagh," said Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalisation Alliance.

"Despite this, if the government does not accept our demands, we will go to Jamuna (state guest house), and afterwards, will go on fast-unto-death," he vowed.

Teachers from non-government educational institutions under MPO (Monthly Pay Order) scheme across the country began an indefinite work stoppage on Monday, October 13, pressing for their three-point demand, and in protest against attacks on their programmes by police.
