100 more detained in Operation Devil Hunt in Gazipur

Police have detained 100 more individuals, including a former Member of Parliament (MP), during Operation Devil Hunt in Gazipur. Among them, 79 were detained in the metropolitan area, while district police detained 21 Awami League leaders and activists.

Former Sirajganj-6 MP Chayan Islam, who had been in hiding, was arrested in Sripur upazila. Police apprehended him from the house of Khairul Islam Milon in the Matir Mosque area around 12:00 am on Sunday (February 9). He had reportedly been staying there with his wife for approximately two months. Chayan Islam faces multiple cases, including charges of extortion and murder in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj.

Additionally, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) arrested Anowara Sarker Anu, President of the Gazipur Metropolitan Juba Mohila League, from Uttara on Sunday night.

According to police sources, 79 individuals were detained from various police stations under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, including Sadar, Gacha, Basan, Pubail, Konabari, Kashimpur, Tongi East, and Tongi West. Meanwhile, district police detained 21 people from Kaliakair, Sripur, Kapasia, and Kaliganj. The detainees include three from Kapasia, four from Kaliganj, five from Sripur, three from Kaliakair, and six from Joydebpur Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner (Special Branch) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Alomgir Hossain, stated that 79 individuals were detained in operations across eight police stations in the metropolitan area, and legal proceedings are underway.

Gazipur District Police Superintendent Dr Chowdhury Md Zaber Sadek confirmed that necessary legal measures are being taken against the detainees.

Earlier on Sunday, police detained 65 Awami League (AL) leaders and activists as part of the nationwide crackdown under Operation Devil Hunt.
