Low pressure in bay, may trigger rain across Bangladesh

A well-marked low-pressure system has developed in the Bay of Bengal, raising the possibility of increased rainfall across the country in the coming days.

This weather development has also contributed to a reduction in the heat wave that had been affecting several districts. While eight districts experienced a heat wave yesterday, only four districts – Faridpur, Sirajganj, Feni, and Jashore– are currently under its influence.

The Meteorological Office reports that the mild heat wave in these areas is expected to subside soon. Meanwhile, there is a strong likelihood of rainfall across the country starting from Wednesday and continuing through Thursday.

According to the forecast issued at 6:00pm on Tuesday, temporary gusty winds, lightning, rain, or thunderstorms may occur in parts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions over the next 48 hours.

Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana explained that the current low-pressure system could potentially intensify into a depression. However, even if it does not, the associated weather conditions are expected to bring significant rainfall across Bangladesh for one to two days.

The ongoing low-pressure system has already caused temperatures to drop in many districts, providing relief from the scorching heat.

The Meteorological Office predicts that the heat wave will further ease by Wednesday, with daytime temperatures likely to decrease by 1-2 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Night-time temperatures are also expected to dip slightly.

The lowest temperature in the country on Tuesday was recorded at 19.5 degrees Celsius in Rajarhat, while the highest was 36.4 degrees Celsius in Baghabari.
