Bus roof torn off in crash, driver continues 5km

In a shocking incident on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Sreenagar, Munshiganj, the roof of a passenger bus was torn off after a collision with a covered van on Thursday night. Despite the severe damage, the driver continued driving with passengers on board for nearly five kilometers before the vehicle was finally stopped.

The bus, carrying around 60 passengers, left Dhaka’s Sayedabad terminal at around 8:30 pm en route to Barishal. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm in the Samashpur area of Sreenagar.

According to passengers and locals, the bus—identified as ‘Barishal Express’—first collided with a microbus shortly after entering the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. Minutes later, it crashed into a covered van, which caused the entire roof of the bus to be blown off. Shockingly, the driver did not stop despite passengers’ screams and continued driving, diverting from the Padma Bridge route onto an adjacent road.

Locals eventually managed to intercept the bus near Siddiqia Madrasa in Kumarbhog, Louhajang, and safely evacuated the passengers. By that time, the driver had fled the scene.

Five passengers were reported injured in the crash. One, in critical condition, was referred to Dhaka from the Upazila Health Complex for advanced treatment. The remaining injured received first aid locally.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hasara Highway Police Station, Abdul Kader Jilani, confirmed that the bus had collided with both a microbus and a covered van, resulting in the roof being torn off. OC of Padma Bridge North Police Station, Zakir Hossain, said the injured were transferred to another vehicle and sent to their destinations. The bus has been seized, but the driver remains at large.
