4 KUET students who led protest against VC attacked

Four students who led a protest demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) were attacked by unidentified miscreants.

The incident occurred around 8:15 pm on Saturday (April 26). The injured students were admitted to KUET's medical centre for treatment.

The injured have been identified as Md Obaidullah, Mujahidul Islam, Galib Rahat, and Mohon — all belonging to the 19th batch of the university.

Galib Rahat said they had gone out for a walk and reached the Fulbari Gate intersection in the evening. Around 8 pm, before they could realise anything, 8–10 individuals armed with sticks and stumps started beating them indiscriminately.

Another student, Rahatul Islam, stated that around 8:15 pm, the four students had gone outside the campus to eat when 10–12 youths attacked them with sticks. After the attackers fled, the injured students were taken to KUET’s medical centre.

Khanjahan Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kabir Hossain said efforts are underway to identify and detain the perpetrators.

Earlier, on February 18 and 19, clashes broke out between KUET students and outsiders. Following those incidents, the university authorities held several emergency syndicate meetings and decided to suspend academic activities and vacate the residential halls.

After Ramadan and Eid holidays, students defied administrative restrictions and returned to campus on April 13, entering the halls from April 15. They began a hunger strike on April 21 demanding the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation. On the night of April 23, authorities announced a partial acceptance of the students' demands. The next day, April 25, the Ministry of Education officially issued a notification relieving KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Mashud and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Pro-VC) Professor Dr SK Shariful Alam from their duties.
