A Bangladeshi national was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah.

The incident occurred early Sunday, April 27, on the Indian side of the border near Madhupur village.

The deceased was identified as Md Obaidul, son of Hanef Ali of Gopalpur village in Jadabpur union under Maheshpur upazila.

Locals said that 7–8 people had crossed into India around midnight on Saturday (April 26). At one point, the BSF surrounded them. While the others managed to flee, Obaidul and Mikail were trapped. Shortly afterward, locals heard gunshots. Later, Obaidul’s body was found lying on the Indian side of the border. Meanwhile, Mikail returned home around noon.

Lt Col Md Rafiqul Alam, commander of the 58th BGB Battalion in Maheshpur, said that around 8:45 am, the BSF battalion commander phoned him and confirmed the recovery of a body. However, he did not confirm whether the deceased was Bangladeshi.

The body has been kept at Bagda Police Station in India’s North 24 Parganas district. Anyone wishing to make a statement regarding the identity of the deceased has been advised to contact the BSF or Bagda Police Station.
