Army launches inquiry into detained officer’s political ties: ISPR

A court of inquiry has been formed to investigate allegations of political involvement against a Bangladesh Army officer who was recently detained.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the matter in a statement on Friday (August 1).

According to the ISPR press release, a law enforcement agency recently received information suggesting that a Bangladesh Army officer was involved in political activities. Upon receiving the complaint, the Army took the matter with utmost seriousness. Subsequently, on July 17, the officer was detained from his house in the capital’s Uttara area and placed in military custody.

“To ensure a fair and impartial investigation, a court of inquiry has already been constituted. Preliminary findings indicate evidence supporting the allegations. Upon completion of the full investigation, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with military laws and regulations, based on the facts and evidence gathered,” the statement said.

The statement added that the Bangladesh Army is coordinating with the police and other relevant law enforcement agencies in this regard.

“Additionally, a separate court of inquiry has been formed to investigate the officer’s unauthorised absence from duty. Legal action will be taken as per the Army Act, based on the recommendations of the inquiry,” it added.

The ISPR further stated that the Bangladesh Army is an apolitical, disciplined, and professional institution. There is no room for political involvement within the force. Any member found engaged in such activities will face appropriate legal consequences under military law. The Army remains committed to upholding professionalism, discipline, and its constitutional responsibilities.
