3km tailback at Jamuna Bridge causes severe Dhaka-bound delays

A 3-kilometer-long traffic tailback formed on the Dhaka-bound lane of the Jamuna Bridge in Sirajganj on Saturday morning as a large number of holidaymakers returned to their workplaces after Eid.

The congestion developed at the western toll plaza from early morning, creating a long queue of vehicles waiting to cross the bridge. Many commuters reported delays of up to two hours, causing significant inconvenience for travelers from northern and southern regions.

At around 6:30 am, hundreds of vehicles were seen lined up on the western side, with traffic moving slowly toward the bridge. While the Dhaka-bound lane remained heavily congested, the eastern side (Tangail end) of the bridge experienced normal traffic flow, and vehicles heading north were moving without disruption.

Passengers expressed frustration over the delays, saying their travel time had increased considerably due to the traffic buildup.

Talking over the phone, Sub-Inspector Ziaur Rahman of Jamuna Bridge West Police Station told Jago News that vehicle pressure at the western toll plaza increased from early morning, resulting in a long queue stretching up to three kilometers on the western side of the bridge.

He added that the congestion on the Dhaka-bound road has caused inconvenience for passengers, but the situation is expected to improve as the day progresses and traffic pressure decreases.

Ismail Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, said that although there is significant vehicle pressure in the Dhaka-bound lane, there is no complete traffic jam on the highway.

He also noted that traffic toward northern regions is running smoothly.

“We are working in coordination with district police to ensure that passengers can reach their workplaces without disruption,” he added.
