CEC blames political influence for EC’s bad reputation

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Sunday stated that the Election Commission (EC) does not wish to stand in favor of or against any political party. He remarked that the commission has gained a bad reputation due to political control.
He made these remarks at the annual general meeting and award distribution ceremony of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED), held at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Seeking everyone's cooperation to maintain neutrality, the CEC said, "We, who are in the commission, do not want to be involved in politics. We do not want to stand for or against any political party. We want to remain neutral. Please support us in this effort."
He further added, "Why does the Election Commission face so much criticism and blame? You may list 100 or even 200 reasons, but to me, the number one reason is the political control over the Election Commission."
"I believe this is the most significant reason. Handing over the Election Commission to political influence is the biggest issue," he emphasized.
Highlighting the need to stop political interference in the Election Commission, the CEC stated, "If the influence of politicians on the Election Commission is not stopped, I believe the same old issues will be repeated."
Other four election commissioners and the EC secretary were also present at the event.
