Shahbagh blocked for 2nd day demanding 'July Charter'

Protesters injured in the July Uprising blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka for second day on Friday morning, August 1, to demand the swift implementation of the 'July Charter' and 'July Proclamation'.

The demonstrators under the banner of 'July Martyr Family and July Warriors' gathered at the intersection and put up barricade amid the rain to block the road.

As a result, the vehicular movement were suspended around the intersection, causing suffering to commutters.

The protesters said they will continue their blockade until the government announces a positive and specific decision regading their demand.

"We – family members of July martyrs and July warriors – gathered here (Shahbagh) from 64 district and will stay until our demands are met," said Arman Shafin, convener of the 'July Warriors Council'. 

Saying that the government has not contacted them yet, Masud Rana Sourav, another organiser of the protest, vowed, "Our decision is final. Even if we die, we will not leave Shahbagh without July Charter."

Earlier, the protesters blocked the Shahbagh intersection on Thursday morning, July 31, and a confrontation broke out between them and the police around 5:30pm when the law enforcers tried to remove the barricade.
